We are thrilled to welcome new vendors this year!

Lucero’s Salsa – Lucero Obregon is a master chef from Mexico City now living in the Hudson Valley.  She was the chef at Zocalo in Atlanta, and also at Pampano in NYC, the restaurant owned by Placido Domingo. Starting tomorrow she will be bringing her delicious and personally prepared line of salsas to the Peekskill Farmers Market!

 

 

Hudson Valley Seafood cares about the future of fishing.

Fishmongers (seafood specialists), are the liaisons between the fishermen and the consumer.

In 1822, The Fulton Fish Market was opened as a wing of the original Fulton Market in the lower east side of Manhattan. The market quickly became a destination for fishermen of the Atlantic to unload their catch. This created an enormous boom in the commercial fishing, wholesale and retail industries. Shipments of fish began to make their way inland via horse and carriage. This is when we also saw an influx of seafood consumption in restaurants all over the country.

Fast forward about 200 years and The New Fulton Market is second in size only to Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market. Annual sales surpass $1 Billion annually and are expected to reach $2 Billion in annual sales by 2022.

A Visit With Arch River Farm

Last weekend we visited with Jeff Wendover, owner of Arch River Farm. We had a great time visiting the animals and finding out more about what life is like on the farm.

Peekskill Farmers Market: Hi Jeff! Thank you for the tour. We’re so happy to finally get up here and see the property.

Jeff: Took ya long enough. I’ve only been inviting you for two years.

 

PFM: Yes…well….um…hey look donkeys!

Jeff: Aw they’re my babies. Come on I’ll introduce you.

PFM: How long have you been on this land?

Jeff: I’ve been here for about ten years. But I grew up in this town and my family always had animals. I worked on neighbors farms, learned how to fix equipment, and take care of animals. I had a different property before I came here but I fell in love with this place as soon as I saw it.

PFM: Our shoppers want to know what you do in the off-season.

Jeff: Laughing SLEEP! Nah not really. Animals still gotta be fed. I’m up around 4am every day.

PFM: It’s a hard life being a farmer.

Jeff: Yeah it’s hard but there’s nothing else I’d want to do. I love my animals. Even the ones that are meant for eating live good lives while they’re here. We treat them all with kindness and respect. We talk to sweet to them. Pet them. They have a good life while they’re on my land and I won’t tolerate anyone working here being mean to my babies.

PFM: I’ve heard stories about big farm businesses being cruel to the animals. That’s another reason why it’s good to buy from your local farm.

Jeff: You bet. I only have as many as I can care for and sell in a season. There’s a balance that works. The right amount of animals on the property at any given time. The right amount of people working with them. The right feed. Everything costs money, and time, and energy. But I mean to do it right. Happy animals, happy customers, happy life.

PFM: Thank you so much for the tour Jeff. It’s beautiful here.

Jeff: Tell everyone on the website that I can’t wait to see them again on opening day.
