Thanks to everyone who took a guess, but market shopper John came closest to the actual weight of the giant pumpkin within 3 lbs. He and his daughter took home a box of market goodies. That massive squash weighed 347 lbs! Our thanks to Rolling Ridge Farm for growing and transporting this year’s contest pumpkin. Let’s do it again next year!

We love autumn – the glorious color on the foliage, the crisp chill in the air, and of course, pumpkins and gourds! The autumn harvest is also abundant with beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, kale, and there is still so much lettuce! In addition to produce, we have cheese, honey, eggs, spices, yogurt, jams, pickles, and baked goods.

Next week October 29th don’t miss our Halloween Party! Candy for everyone in costume.

See you tomorrow on Bank Street. 8am-2pm.

Get Fresh! October 15th

This week we welcome new vendor Neversink Spirits to the market. Please stop by their tent and sample some delicious Apple Brandy and Gin.

Neversink Spirits was founded by long-time friends Noah Braunstein and Yoni Rabino. They formed a local collective they call “The Food Cycle,” with Camps Road Farm and Kent Falls Brewery. Waste from the brewing and distilling processes is recycled back on the farm as compost and animal feed. This increases the productivity of the farm, and closes the sustainability loop. A great idea!

Neversink-Apple-Brandy

Noah and Yoni are passionate about apples and want to share that passion with their customers. In 2012, with volunteers and friends, they planted over 350 apple trees on Camps Road Farm. Spirits are produced from over 15 varieties of apples, all difficult to obtain heritage varietals that produce excellent cider and brandies.

They’re great guys, making a great product. They fit right in at the Peekskill Farmers Market!

mozz4u-001Another new vendor coming tomorrow is Mozzarella 4U. Greg Tosto came to America from Calabria, Italy on September 5, 1965. Greg grew up in the Belmont section of the Bronx (Little Italy). He was always fascinated with food, especially fresh mozzarella. Greg had his first gourmet shop at age 24 in New York City. Pasta Villaggio specialized in making fresh pasta and hand made fresh mozzarella products. Greg got married to Rose in June 1987 and expanded to other stores. Greg and Rose started the mozzarella department at Stew Leonard’s in Yonkers. They are now building Mozzarella 4 u at HMART in Hardsdale. They can also be found at great farmers’ markets in the Hudson Valley.
